Description
In 2004, Musica Alta Ripa celebrated its 20th anniversary in the Hanover Opera House with three gala concerts commemorating the 350th anniversary of the birth of Agostino Steffani. The Italian-born composer had quite the impressive resume. In 1681, Elector Maximilian II Emanuel made him director of court chamber music; in 1688 he was called to Hanover to serve as court Kapellmeister and was put in charge of its first permanent Italian opera company. Set in the Crusades, his Orlando Generoso is a variant on the Renaissance epic poem Orlando Furioso.

"A bewildering farrago of obsession, delusion and manipulation, people falling in and out of love on a merry-go-round of stardust. Yet there is little that is merry about it all, with pain lurking beneath the comedy. I soon gave up trying to keep pace … relishing instead the frequent beauties of Steffani's amazingly varied score…. In most baroque operas you can throw one aria into the air and it will land perfectly happily into another opera altogether, and not everyone will notice the difference. With Steffani that doesn't happen, and there was an inevitable logic to the musical unfolding."—Birmingham Post
