Description
Australia's first prima donna, Nellie Melba ruled Covent Garden for nearly 40 years and was described as having a voice like a nightingale. One critic described her trill as "a string of pearls." In 1908, opera impresario Oscar Hammerstein I declared: "Nobody sings like Melba, and nobody ever will." Beautifully annotatated in the Nimbus fashion, this collection includes opera arias ("Voi che sapete" from The Marriage of Figaro, "Depuis le jour" from Louise, the "Mad Scene" from Hamlet, "Ave Maria" from Otello, "Vissi d'arte" from Tosca, "Me chiamano Mimi" from La Boheme), as well as a wealth of art songs (e.g., Debussy's "Mandoline," Chausson's "Le temps des lilas," and Hahn's "D'une prison").

"One of the fabled names in opera history, Melba made her records not long after her prime…. Even in 1907, at 48, her incomparable Hamlet mad scene … posed little challenge."—Opera News

"Voices from the beginning of the century have been remastered on CD with remarkable freshness and clarity in the new 'Prima Voce' series on Nimbus."—Washington Post
