Description
(Winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Hawthornden Prize) The Whitbread Award–winning biographer of Samuel Pepys and Mary Wollstonecraft, Claire Tomalin also gave us this brilliant 1990 study of actress Nelly Ternan and her profound impact on Charles Dickens's life and work—the basis for Ralph Fiennes's film of the same name, co-starring Felicity Jones. Ternan met Dickens in 1857; she was 18, performing in his play The Frozen Deep, and he was 45, the most lionized writer in England. Out of their meeting came a love affair lasted until his death 13 years later, though it destroyed Dickens's marriage, and Ternan herself was deliberately effaced from the public record by Dickens's family. Tomalin rescues Ternan from the shadows, at once returning the neglected actress to her rightful place and providing a fresh portrait of the great novelist himself.
