Description
New York Times critic Robert Shelton (1926–1995) met and befriended Bob Dylan in 1961 when the young singer first arrived in the city, and wrote a review in the paper that gave Dylan's career a tremendous boost. This book, first published in 1986, was written from interviews collected over 20 years and from Shelton's firsthand knowledge of Dylan's work through the 60s. In this 2011 edition, celebrating Dylan's 70th birthday, Elizabeth Thomson & Patrick Humphries restore significant parts of Shelton's original manuscript and also includes key images of Dylan throughout his career, with updated footnotes and bibliography and a new selective discography.

"Since 1986 this volume has continued to stand out from the pack, arguably serving as the most definitive study of Dylan and the events that inspired him to pen his most memorable songs.... While Robert Shelton never saw Dylan after the late 1970s, his text gives the reader enough insight into the artist to track his career well into the 21st century—with a contemporary boost from the two editors."—ForeWord

"A friend of Dylan's and a fan, Shelton succeeds in making this opaque and often irritating person comprehensible, even likable. Dylan has always shrouded himself in mysterioso antics, railed against inconstant friends and fallen into the trap of being one himself (notable instance: turning his back on Joan Baez) and delighted in giving out meaningless, perverse and nasty interviews. Shelton manages to locate the authentic Dylan: the pilgrim seeking enlightenment and salvation, the husband and father, the genius who wrote songs as beautiful as 'Blowin' in the Wind,' 'Don't Think Twice' and 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door,' and as apocalyptic and prophetic as 'Maggie's Farm,' 'Desolation Row' and 'Hard Rain.' The author incorporates a number of lines from Dylan's work into his text.... This is first-rate biography and a marvelous re-creation of the music scene of the '60s and later."—Publishers Weekly
