Description
Ephialtes, a founder of Athenian democracy, literally falls from the sky at the feet of Nicolaos, at the start of this historical mystery in 5th-century Greece. Within minutes, the shrewd Nicolaos is commissioned by Pericles, a promising young politician, to find the great man's killer. It doesn't help that Pericles keeps looking over his shoulder, or that the chief suspect is Pericles's father Xanthippus. Also not helping is the fact that Nicolaos is very distracted by his investigative assistant Diotima (a priestess of Artemis, and sworn to virginity), and that he can't get rid of his annoyingly brainy little brother Socrates. Gary Corby's delightfully entertaining debut is based on historical figures and events.

"Those who like their historicals with a touch of humor will welcome Australian author Corby's promising debut.... Members of the Areopagus, the city's ruling council, had the most to lose from Ephialtes's policies, but the neophyte detective finds that not even his exalted employer is above suspicion. The bodies pile up as the investigation continues, leading to a dramatic climax in which Nicolaos's survival hinges on his cracking the mystery. Corby displays a real gift for pacing and plotting."Publishers Weekly (starred review)
