Description
Illustrated with black and white photos and reproductions of art in the collection of the Bath Marine Museum, this compact little handbook from the Marine Research Society of Bath, Maine, considers the involvement of Maine men in the U.S. whaling industry in the 19th century. While a few whaling ships set out from Maine, meeting with little to moderate success—perhaps Mainers were too independent-minded for the specialized teamwork of the whale hunt, suggests the author—and many Maine sailors set out on other states' whalers, Maine's greatest contribution to American whaling seems to have been shipbuilding. All are discussed here, with insights into the industry and brief histories of particular ships.
