Description
A wealthy bon vivant of the 1920s, Lord Peter Wimsey is played to perfection by British comedy actor Ian Carmichael in these original BBC adaptations of the Dorothy L. Sayers mystery novels. It was this outstanding series that inspired PBS's Masterpiece Theatre to create the spin-off program Mystery! in 1980. Running about three hours each, the five Wimsey dramas do full justice to Sayers's vivid characters, trenchant wit, and lavish settings: Death hits close to home when Lord Peter finds his future brother-in-law murdered and his own brother accused in Clouds of Witness. The "unpleasantness" in The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club is the death of one of its members—on the same day as his sister—and it falls to Lord Peter to determine who died first, as a sizeable fortune is at stake. In Murder Must Advertise, Lord Peter goes undercover at Pym's Publicity to investigate the suspicious death of a young copywriter, while in Five Red Herrings he must determine which of six suspects could have murdered an unpopular artist. And, stranded in a sleepy village after a car accident, Lord Peter stumbles on a decades-old case of stolen emeralds and unidentifiable corpses, in the case of The Nine Tailors.
