Description
Captain Stephen Wynn Vickers joined the Cheshire Regiment at the outset of World War I, but after being badly wounded, he was reassigned to the RFC (Royal Flying Corps). While other young pilots were killed or injured almost as soon as they got their wings, Captain Vickers survived numerous crash and forced landings, completing an astonishing 73 sorties over enemy territory before being repatriated in May 1918. Drawing upon Vickers's correspondence and family photographs—16 pages of which appear here—Joe Bamford tells the story of a pioneering night pilot of the Great War.
