Description
New Orleans pianist, bandleader, and composer Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe (a.k.a. Jelly Roll Morton) was jazz's first arranger, and his "Jelly Roll Blues" of 1915 was the first published jazz song. "These were the first great jazz compositions," writes Ben Ratliff of the selections on this disc in The New York Times Essential Library: Jazz, calling them "models that much serious jazz composition was henceforth based on." The 23 tracks include "Black Bottom Stomp," "Sidewalk Blues," "The Chant" "Mr. Jelly Lord," "Wolverine Blues," "Beale Street Blues," "Original Jelly Roll Blues," "Doctor Jazz," "Hyena Stomp," and "Dead Man Blues."
