Description
Born in the Ukraine in 1894 and dying in Paris in 1939, journalist and novelist Joseph Roth witnessed the final days of the cosmopolitan, tolerant culture of Central Europe before it was swallowed up by the Nazis. As he crisscrossed the continent, he wrote hundreds of letters documenting his father's madness, his wife's schizophrenia, his parade of mistresses (each more exotic than the last), and his journey from Hapsburg to Vienna, Berlin, Frankfurt, and finally Paris. Having translated every other major Roth work including The Radetzky March, Michael Hofmann presents this stunning biography in letters, forming a moving portrait of the life of the writer as an outsider, in exile from a world he no longer recognized as his own.

"Reading Joseph Roth: A Life in Letters is like sitting across a café table from Roth himself.... No standard biography of Roth exists in English, but this collection of his letters, superbly translated and judiciously edited by longtime Roth advocate Michael Hofmann, provides a more intimate portrait than any biography could."—Boston Review
