Description
Created by former BBC radio producer Jane Sanderson, and based on some of her own family history, the fictional Yorkshire estate of Netherwood Hall and its nearby coal mining community form a perfect setting to explore the sweeping changes facing traditional Britain at the cusp of the modern era. Sanderson's heroine Eve Williams, raising three children on her own, has a foot in both the upstairs realm of Lord Netherwood and the downstairs world of the estate staff and the men who tunnel into the Yorkshire hills. This second novel of the series, following Netherwood, opens in 1904. On Netherwood Common, Russian émigré Anna Rabinovich shows her dear friend Eve a house—a Victorian villa named Ravenscliffe, solidly built from local stone—where she wants them both to live. Anna is increasingly attracted to Amos, a union activist at the mine, while at Netherwood Hall, cherished traditions are being undermined by Tobias Hoyland, the lord's feckless heir, and his American bride Thea Stirling.
