Description
This first volume of Phaidon Design Classics collects 333 classics of consumer product design, up to the mid-20th century, that were made possible by new inventions, discoveries, and manufacturing techniques, ranging from elegantly simple, flexible, and durable Zhang Xiaoquan scissors, introduced in China's Zhejiang province in 1633, to Eero Saarinen's Womb Chair, introduced in 1948 New York by Knoll. Here you'll find the safety pin and the Ford Model T, among masterworks by such designers as Christopher Dresser, Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer, and Mies van der Rohe. Originally produced in 2006 as three books bundled together, Phaidon Design Classics is now available as three separate volumes; they remain an outstanding reference for the finest examples of mass produced consumer products, primarily from the 20th century (though reaching from the 17th to the 21st). These are true classics, from scissors to chairs, watches to airplanes, selected by an international panel of scholars, curators, journalists, designers, and architects. Each of the 333 products in this volume (there are 999 total across the three volumes) is treated to a two- or four-page entry with large photos and drawings, and the book is indexed by product, designer, category, chronology, and contributor (each volume contains full indexes to all three).
