Description
Twenty years after the Battle of Gettysburg, a group of editors at The Century Magazine argued over which Civil War battles had been the bloodiest. They decided to put the debate before their readers, and began soliciting accounts from the very men who had led the battles, on both sides. What started as a series of articles by contributors like William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip Sheridan, George B. McClellan, James Longstreet, John Pope, Daniel H. Hill, Lew Wallace, P.G.T. Beauregard, and Ulysses S. Grant turned into a national discussion of the war that ran on for more than three years, and included remarkable accounts by frontline soldiers. This discussion made The Century the leading periodical of its day and resulted in four published volumes, the cream of which are collected here in this singular firsthand history, with introductions and perspective by modern historians.
