Description
The war that took half a million lives left a legacy of pain that this 32-song collection seeks to transform through honoring and exploring its musical heritage. Featuring both veteran and vanguard performers from the genres of country, folk, bluegrass, and rock, it's a monumental and intensely moving achievement. Performers include Loretta Lynn ("Take Your Gun and Go, John"), Chris Hillman (Stephen Foster's "Hard Times"), John Doe ("Tenting on the Old Campground"), Joe Henry ("Aura Lee"), Jorma Kaukonen ("The Mermaid Song"), Stuart Duncan and Dolly Parton ("Listen to the Mockingbird"), Vince Gill ("Dear Old Flag"), Carolina Chocolate Drops ("Day of Liberty"), Old Crow Medicine Show ("Marching Through Georgia"), Taj Mahal ("Down by the Riverside"), and Ashley Monroe ("Pretty Saro").

"The album mixes new takes on old tunes like 'Dixie' (by Karen Elson and the Secret Sisters) and 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home' (Angel Snow) with a raucous partisan Yankee stomp like Shovels & Rope's 'The Fall of Charleston' and the rebel reel 'Secesh' (The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band)…. Some tunes sound like after-action reports telegraphed from the front. Among them are T Bone Burnett's dirge, 'The Battle of Antietam,' and Ricky Skaggs's 'Two Soldiers'…. 'Every cut on the album sounds so raw and real,' says Lee Ann Womack, who contributes just such a track—'The Legend of the Rebel Soldier,' about a Confederate private dying in a Yankee prison cell…. Ms. Elson's heartbeat-slow version of 'Dixie' highlights the Confederate anthem's ambiguous origins: According to additional liner notes written by New Lost City Ramblers founding member John Cohen, the song was written for the blackface minstrel stage of the day, by a Yankee with abolitionist leanings. Yet it would become, to composer Daniel Decatur Emmett's dismay, a defiant rallying cry for the Confederacy."—Wall Street Journal
