Description
Although there's much cross-fertilization, this 48-track overview of American roots music covers a quartet of genres, each with its own CD: folk, bluegrass, blues, and country. Highlights of the first CD include "Rock Island Line" by Lead Belly, "Blowin' Down the Road" by Woody Guthrie, "John Henry" by Josh White, "Darling Corey" by Burl Ives, and "Reuben James" by the Almanac Singers. The "high lonesome," instrumentally rich genre of bluegrass is represented by Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys ("Blue Moon of Kentucky"; "Kentucky Waltz"; "Orange Blossom Special"), Flatt & Scruggs ("Foggy Mountain Breakdown"), Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys ("In Heaven We'll Never Grow Old"; "Ain't It Hard"), and the Blue Sky Boys ("Are You from Dixie?"). Blues greats include Robert Johnson with "Stop Breakin' Down Blues," Bessie Smith with "Careless Love," Ma Rainey with "Black Eye Blues," Georgia White with "Dead Man Blues," and Meade Lux Lewis with "Honky Tonk Train Blues." Among the iconic country songs on the fourth disc are "Lovesick Blues" by Hank Williams, "Back in the Saddle Again" by Gene Autry, "Blue Yodel #8" by Jimmie Rodgers, "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" by the Sons of the Pioneers, "New San Antonio Rose" by Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, and "I'm Movin' On" by Hank Snow.
