Description
Listening to Louis Armstrong's solos on "West End Blues" and "St. James Infirmary," as well as Jelly Roll Morton's arrangements on "Doctor Jazz Stomp," you literally hear jazz being born. It wasn't long before the great bandleaders Count Basie ("St. Louis Blues"; "Jive at Five"), Duke Ellington ("Take the 'A' Train"; "Cotton Tail"), Fletcher Henderson ("Henderson Stomp"), and Cab Calloway ("Minnie the Moocher") entered the scene. The swing era ushered in the dance bands of Benny Goodman ("Avalon"), Jimmy Dorsey ("Amapola"), and Woody Herman ("Blues in the Night"), while the new microphone technology allowed vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald to soar over the orchestra ("Undecided"; "A Tisket, A-Tasket") or to fashion intimate and distinctive interpretations of popular ballads like "Stormy Weather" (Lena Horne), "Fine and Mellow"/"These Foolish Things" (Billie Holiday), "I Wished on the Moon" (Bing Crosby), and "Lover Man" (Sarah Vaughan). Standing out from the pack were instrumentalists like cornetist Sidney Bechet ("Summertime"), saxophonists Lester Young ("It's Only a Paper Moon"), and Coleman Hawkins ("Body and Soul") and pianists Teddy Wilson ("Coquette"), Errol Garner ("Stardust"), and Oscar Peterson ("Stairway to the Stars")ówith ravishing results. With the bop era came more astonishing virtuosos like Miles Davis ("Milestones"; "Half Nelson"), Charlie Parker ("Ornithology"; "Now's the Time"), John Coltrane ("Anedac"), Dizzy Gillespie ("Dizzy Atmosphere"; "All the Things You Are"), Thelonious Monk ("'Round Midnight"), and Dexter Gordon ("Blow Mr. Dexter").
