Description
"You could look at my work as divided into three distinct periods," Paul Simon has said, "Simon & Garfunkel, pre-Graceland solo albums, and Graceland to the present." All of these phases are tapped for this unique retrospective. It begins with 1965's "The Sound of Silence" and "America" (featured in 1968's The Graduate). Four songs come from Bridge Over Troubled Water, one of the most celebrated albums of all time: "The Boxer," "Cecilia," "The Only Living Boy in New York," and the title track (which won an unprecedented five Grammies). Simon's solo era began in 1972 with the airplay staples "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" and "Mother and Child Reunion." Co-produced with Phil Ramone were "American Tune" and the Grammy-winning duo "Still Crazy After All These Years" and "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." Featuring the Oak Ridge Boys vocal quartet, "Slip Slidin' Away" was a Top 5 hit, and "Late in the Evening" made the Top 10. From the phenomenal Graceland collaboration with Ladysmith Black Mambazo come "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" and "You Can Call Me Al," while "Spirit Voices" features vocals by Brazilian great Milton Nascimento. The Grammy nod for You're the One ("That's Where I Belong") made Simon the first artist nominated for Best Album over five consecutive decades. In 2006 Surprise ("Everything About It Is a Love Song") and in 2011 So Beautiful or So What ("Love and Hard Times") proved that Simon's sophisticated yet accessible touch remained intact.

"So Beautiful or So What, steeped in Afropop and American folk forms, climbs some of the most resplendent summits of Simon's career."LA Times
