Description
This oversized album reproduces the remarkable plates from Ippolito Rosellini's The Monuments of Egypt and Nubia, produced after his 1829 expedition with Rosetta Stone decipherer Jean-François Champollion, when the two men were the leading proponents of the new science of Egyptology. More than 100 vivid illustrations—some nearly 20 x 14 inches—depict such subjects as harpists in the tomb of Ramesses III; the "Garden of Amun," carved in a Theban tomb, which was destroyed sometime after Rosellini recorded it; offerings of food and water to the green-skinned god Ptah-Sokar; and numerous examples of Egyptian ornament, which were to have an enormous impact on European textiles and décor for the next century.
