Description
When Napoleon set out to conquer Egypt in 1798 he also brought with him 167 of France's leading scholars—mathematicians, astronomers, naturalists, engineers, architects, draftsmen, and men of letters—to study the profoundly ancient country. Their efforts culminated in one of the most ambitious cultural catalogs ever produced, the Description de l'Egypte, which included more than 3,000 drawings and 837 copperplate engravings—many of them works of art in their own right. This oversized book vividly reproduces hundreds of these color and black and white images, revealing the fine detail in illustrations of the Temple of Amun-Ra, the Pyramids of Giza, and the Colossi of Memnon.
