Description
This little volume by Pulitzer Prize–winning historian David McCullough describes the White House Christmas celebrations of 1941 when, just days after the attack of Pearl Harbor, Winston Churchill visited Franklin Roosevelt, and both leaders spoke during the lighting of the National Christmas Tree. McCullough also tells the stories of two favorite Christmas songs: "O Little Town of Bethlehem," by American clergyman Phillips Brooks, which Churchill had never heard before, and "I'll Be Home for Christmas," written by Kim Gannon and Walter Kent to stir Allied morale. Illustrated with archival photos throughout, the book includes transcripts of FDR's and Churchill's speeches and a DVD of McCullough reading his story during the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's 2009 Christmas Concert.

"It's an unexpected but winning combination: the Mormon Tabernacle Choir; a two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning historian, whose books have also received two National Book Awards; and a small press in Salt Lake City that publishes a dozen books each year."—Publishers Weekly
