Description
Alongside Richard Wagner, who was also born in 1813, Giuseppe Verdi was the most influential opera composer of the 19th century. Containing ten complete operas, restored and remastered, this bicentennial set captures the drama of Verdi's greatest masterworks as they were performed live on one of the world's foremost stages. These historic radio broadcasts span four decades at the Met. Starting with La Traviata in 1935 with Rosa Ponselle as Violetta, they feature some of the best-loved voices and conductors of the 20th century, including the pairing of tenor Richard Tucker and baritone Leonard Warren in Simon Boccanegra and La Forza del Destino and Carlo Bergonzi, Grace Bumbry, Leontyne Price, and Robert Merrill singing in a 1967 Aida. Other pairings sure to bring ecstasy to opera buffs are Bidu Sayão and Jussi Bjorling in Rigoletto and Zinka Milanov and Björling in Un Ballo in Maschera. The other operas are Falstaff, Macbeth, and Nabucco, conducted by Fritz Reiner, Erich Leinsdorf, and Thomas Schippers, respectively.
