Description
Doing justice to the music of the petite chanteuse with the huge voice is a tall order, but these performers do the Little Sparrow proud. The set list includes "Padam, Padam," "Sous le ciel de Paris," "Amants d'un jour," "L'accordéoniste," "La fille et le chien," "La goualante du pauvre Jean," "Johnny, tu n'es pas un ange," "Non, je ne regrette rien," and a group performance of her most famous song, "La vie en rose."

"Heart-rending emotion. Like Billie Holiday's music, Piaf's songs reflected the joys and sorrows of life, bringing deep personal meaning to every word…. Barbara Morrison provides one of the highlights with 'Autumn Leaves,' singing with an assured air, letting the power of Johnny Mercer's words sink in before setting off to scat and let the song bounce…. Catherine Ringer, Regine and Angelique Kidjo are expressive singers who immerse themselves within a song until it throbs and palpitates with life…. An exhilarating evening."—All About Jazz

Staged every July along the shore of Lake Geneva, the Montreux Jazz Festival is one of the most prestigious annual music festivals in the world and second only to the Montreal International Jazz Festival in size. It first premiered at the old Montreaux Casino in 1967, which, in 1971, burned down during a performance by Frank Zappa—a disaster later immortalized by Deep Purple's hard-rock classic "Smoke on the Water." The venue was originally limited to jazz performers, but in the 1970s, the festival began to feature artists from across the musical spectrum, from Pink Floyd to B.B. King. Montreaux is now a two-week event, and most acts perform in a spacious auditorium.
