Description
Jazz legend Miles Davis's earliest albums on Columbia, encompassing music released from 1957 to 1964 and newly remastered from the original analog tapes, are collected in this historic boxed set of nine CDs in mini-LP replica jackets. Included are the six albums tracing the development of Davis's "first great quintet" and notably featuring John Coltrane ('Round About Midnight, Milestones, Jazz Track, Kind of Blue [the best selling jazz album of all time], Someday My Prince Will Come, and Miles and Monk at Newport), as well as three albums that placed Davis et al. in sophisticated orchestral settings, arranged and conducted by Gil Evans (Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, and Sketches of Spain). "Mono has always been truer to the studio sound and the original intent," said Columbia Producer George Avakian. "Mono featured less audio trickery and fewer audio distractions, so you can actually hear the musical conversation between Miles and the other musicians as it occurred in the studio." The annotated booklet includes an essay by Wall Street Journal writer Marc Myers.
