Description
Nominated for Best Actor, Film, and Screenplay at France's César Awards, this "trenchant, unusually astute comedy" (San Francisco Chronicle) from 2000 begins with a young waiter named Nicolas (Jean-Pierre Lorit) receiving an intriguing job offer when the wealthy, elegant Delamont (Bernard Giraudeau) dines at one of his tables and asks him to become his "taster." From there, things get curioser and curioser. In French with English subtitles. Look for a cameo of Francois Truffaut's pal Jean-Pierre Léaud as a magistrate.

"A Matter of Taste is haunted by the perverse aesthetics of the Marquis de Sade, the infamous French gourmand of power games. The delicately sliced suspense lies in the slowly revealed psychology linking Nicholas and Frederic as they become mirror images…. It's worth noting that co-writer Gilles Taurand was a psychopathology professor for 15 years before getting into film, and he brings a clinical curiosity to his script."—Chicago Sun-Times
