Description
Throughout her phenomenal career, Hilary Hahn has been an advocate for new music, commissioning a concerto by Edgar Meyer and a Pulitzer Prize–winning concerto by Jennifer Higdon. More than ten years ago, she began the ambitious project of enriching the violin repertoire by commissioning more than two dozen composers to write short-form pieces for violin and piano. She then toured these new works internationally over the 2011–13 seasons. Among these wondrous, variegated pieces are Paul Moravec's Blue Fiddle, David Del Tredici's Farewell, Jennifer Higdon's Echo Dash, Tina Davidson's Blue Curve of the Earth, Nico Muhly's Two Voices, Søren Nils Eichberg's Levitation, and Max Richter's Mercy. "There's an idea of the encore being a virtuosic showpiece. I found that a lot of composers in this project wanted to redefine the term 'encore,' Hahn explained in a 2011 interview with NPR. "They wanted to create a different kind of virtuosity, or they wanted to create a lyricism or a thoughtfulness that they had missed in certain kind of encores in the past."

"I know of no violinist today with quite her combination of technical brilliance, interpretive assurance and sheer tonal splendor."—San Francisco Chronicle

"[Hahn is] an unflappably confident advocate. The core of her technique is precision and refinement—elegant sound; frictionless, clean bowing and intonation; polished, rounded-off phrasing."—Boston Globe
