Description
In 1930, 16-year-old Edward Beauclerk Maurice chose not to follow his family from England to a new life on a New Zealand farm and instead signed up to be an apprentice fur trader among the Eskimos. He and some 40 prospective traders set out from Liverpool under the auspices of the Hudson's Bay Company, incorporated in 1670 by Charles II as "the Gentlemen Adventurers trading into Hudson's Bay." They were among the last to do so, as the fur trade soon collapsed. This wonderfully wry memoir of Maurice's five years in the Arctic Circle transports the reader to a world now lost. The Inuit taught him to build igloos, hunt polar bears, and survive ferocious storms, and he absorbed much of their language, myths, and folklore, while forming close friendships and fending off the amorous advances of his female companions at the outpost.
