Description
In 1950s Belgrade, a young man known only as Orpheus is on a quest to balance his life, his loves, and his art, in this comic 1962 novel by Serbian author Danilo Kiš. Orpheus and his friends Eurydice, Mary Magdalene, Tam-Tam, and Billy Wiseass play out the drama of youth in the microcosm of an attic, which is in the process of becoming this book. Rich with references to music, painting, philosophy, and gastronomy, this bohemian Bildungsroman is enlivened by poems, song lyrics, and some very quirky lists. Translator John Cox annotates the text and provides an introduction to Kiš and his work.

"Kiš is one of the handful of incontestably major writers of the second half of the century."—Susan Sontag
