Description
In his final big-budget film—and one of his biggest successes "north of the border"—Cantinflas plays Lopitos, a minor bureaucrat from the Republica de Los Cocos, who during the course of an elaborate state dinner suddenly finds himself left as his country's ambassador. Alternately wooed and cajoled by the superpowers Dolaronia and Pepeslavia, Lopitos realizes that the fate of his country—and possibly the world—rests with his choice. In a speech at the end of this remarkable 1967 film, Cantinflas offers his own opinion of international politics, chastising both superpowers for hijacking the destiny of Latin America. Hailed by Charlie Chaplin as "the greatest comedian in the world," Fortino Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes—known to millions by his character name "Cantinflas"—was compared to Chaplin and also to Groucho Marx for his use of satire and trickery to undercut the pompous and aristocratic. Though his brilliant Spanish wordplay limited his success in English-speaking countries, Cantinflas was a modern folk hero in Mexico, and his death in 1993 was followed by three days of national mourning. This Spanish-language film is subtitled in English.
