Based on Susanna Kaysen's acclaimed memoir of her time in a mental hospital, Girl, Interrupted was an Oscar-winning role in 2000 for Angelina Jolie. Kaysen is portrayed exquisitely by Winona Rider, and actresses playing members of her coterie include Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss and the late Brittany Murphy. Other characters are the stoic but compassionate ward nurse Valerie (Whoopi Goldberg) and the hospital's head psychiatrist, Dr. Wick (Vanessa Redgrave).
"Believable performances of Ryder and Jolie as two lost souls and … strong underplaying of the talented supporting ensemble."—Washington Post
"It's difficult to imagine any actress today bringing more sentience and intelligence to her role here as stand-in for the 17-year-old Kaysen in 1967."—Washington Post
