Description
With selections from the Old and the New Worlds performed in their original languages, classically trained singer Sandra Reid evokes the journey her ancestors made, crossing the Atlantic to settle in an unknown land. Her glowing and exuberant vocals reanimate traditional tunes from France, Brittany, Canada, and Louisiana—including "L'Amoureux de Margot," "Un Canadien Errant," and "Vive l'Amour."

"Hear the driving bodhran and uillean pipes in the Celtic Breton song 'Ar Pilhaouer (The Ragpicker)' while her voice floats, appropriately enough, through the song 'Kimiad an Ene (The Soul's Farewell).' By the time you get into the 'Louisiana Suite' you hear how the African influence works its way into the music by way of the Creole culture. Reid's voice throughout the album is strong and resonant, rendering each song with a depth of feeling and a clarity of tone that allows the listener an appreciation of the source."—New Age Voice

"Almost every selection here is of some considerable appeal, not least because Reid has chosen to sing the texts in their original languages. An exotic melancholy permeates 'The Huron Carol' ….The accompaniments often are almost as beguiling as the singing: try 'Blanche comme la niege', where Randy Crafton's bodhran spices the gloomy atmosphere with just the right dose of rhythmic color. But don't take that to mean that Reid isn't the star here. She is compelling in every piece."—Cosmik Debris

"Listen for 'des pork and beans ils ont mangés' in 'Les Raftsmen,' an authentic Franglais folk song. Reid's versions of Breton songs are also most enjoyable, especially ones intended for dancing. She is accompanied by various musicians, including Jerry O'Sullivan on uillean pipes, Randy Crafton on percussion, and Sean Harkness on guitar; arrangements are acoustic and tend to focus on Crafton's exotic drums."—Dirty Linen

"Four stars."—All Music Guide
