Description
Premiered in 1801, Franz Joseph Haydn's second oratorio links the classical period with the coming era of Romantic music. Set in a pre-industrial, rural milieu, this work depicts many aspects of life in each of the four seasons, including friendship and love, success and hardship, and the rewards of harvest. The Amor Artis Classical Orchestra performs on period instruments.

"A marvelous piece…. Its earthy wit and affection for the vernacular of Austrian folk music lie deep in the composer's DNA. It also features some of Haydn's best tone painting, including bees, frogs, crickets, and even a bird shot during the hunt…. Its majestic choruses are the equal of those in any of the composer's works."—Boston Globe

"There's an enthusiasm in these massed performances that's hard to duplicate in any other context.... Bass-baritone Jan Opalach is terrific in the role of the farmer Simon, with perfectly clear articulation of the text (the 1970s American reworking of the English-language version of the oratorio) and a knack for the jolly, folkish tunes given to this character."—All Music Guide
