Description
Gifted with languages, Virginia Hall left her privileged Baltimore life in 1931 for a Foreign Service career, and after Hitler's invasion of France she volunteered for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE). In Vichy France, Hall pretended to be an American correspondent while coordinating activities of the French Underground, and when she became known, fled over the Pyrenees in the winter of 1942. She joined the American OSS and returned to France in disguise, where she passed information, mapped drop zones, established safe houses, sabotaged communications, trained guerilla fighters, and was responsible for killing or capturing hundreds of German soldiers—and all of this with one wooden leg, the result of a hunting accident in 1932. Judith Pearson commendably portrays Hall's "unflagging courage and energy in dangerous and desperate conditions" (Publishers Weekly).
