Description
Nearly one million New Yorkers fought in World War II; millions more joined the war effort on the home front. This engrossing documentary shares the stories of six of them. Brooklyn Army veteran Manny Medina was shot in the thigh in Okinawa and told he would never walk again, and his future wife Gloria (a former Miss Puerto Rico) took a train to an army hospital in Ohio to be by his side. Bill McBurney, a member of the first African American tank battalion to see combat, fought with distinction in the Battle of the Bulge; Army Air Force navigator Paul Canin made stunning artwork as a POW in Germany; Italian-American Long Islander Josephine Rachiele and her two sisters were riveters; and Marine Lieutenant Phil Wood, killed by enemy fire in the Pacific, lives on through his letters, which are read throughout the program.
