Description
In this remarkable visual biography of William Shakespeare, "the best one-volume account of Shakespeare's life and plays" (Library Journal), F.E. Halliday describes in detail what we can know about the Bard's life after three centuries of discovery. And though "only" illustrated in black and white, the 151 images here include such personal views as a photo of the schoolroom where Shakespeare studied Latin; an engraving of the reconstructed Globe Theatre stage; the complete page 243 of Holinshed's Chronicles, from which Shakespeare learned of Macbeth; and numerous other "exquisite photographs of the Stratford country and facsimiles of records" (NYTBR). Much of his life remains mysterious, but Halliday—an authority on Elizabethan and Jacobean literature, and particularly Shakespeare—documents the playwright's life and work in parallel (while also reassuring us, incidentally, that Shakespeare was indeed the author of the plays attributed to him).
