Description
Recorded in 1957, Mulligan Meets Monk is a summit of two artists from two divergent domains. Thelonious Monk represented what was then known as East Coast jazz, and Gerry Mulligan was deeply rooted in a cooler, West Coast sound, yet the unlikely pairing resulted in an engaging and enduring recording. Tunes include Monk's "'Round Midnight," "Rhythm-A-Ning," and "I Mean You"; Mulligan's "Decidedly;" and the standard "Sweet and Lovely." Bonus tracks on this remastered reissue are alternate takes of "Decidedly" and "Straight, No Chaser," along with two alternate takes of the Monk/Coleman Hawkins piece "I Mean You."

"Monk is easily the greatest composer of jazz standards…. Mulligan, a mere three years previously, turned jazz on its ear by removing the piano as a harmonic instrument, essentially suspending the solo instruments on a highwire with the barest of rhythmic support. The meeting celebrates the spontaneity of jazz, its improvisational core…. This is Monk in all of his strange glory, playing his wonky brand of stride piano and demonstrating how he changed the white hot style of bebop harmonically…. Mulligan has plenty of time and room to fully warm up and blow. Melodically sophisticated, Mulligan's arranging capabilities inform his ensemble and solo play by giving them a deliberate trajectory within the framework of improvisation."—All About Jazz
