In her 18th outing, Santa Teresa–based P.I. Kinsey Millhone has been hired by a wealthy father to befriend his daughter Reba upon her release from prison, and keep her out of trouble until she settles in to her new life. It sounds easy, but the detective learns that Reba's former boss is still involved in a money-laundering scheme, and there are law-enforcement agencies who want Reba to help them get evidence against him. Reba is still looking for revenge against her boss, and recklessly places both Kinsey and herself in jeopardy.
