Description
Written in the last year of his life on the advice of his publisher Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant's frank and unpretentious memoir is a personal history of the Civil War and his remarkable career in the U.S. army, and was completed only a week before he succumbed to cancer. From his boyhood in Ohio, his graduation from West Point, and the military campaigns in the West and in Mexico that ended with his disgraced resignation, Grant goes on to describe such battles as Shiloh, Corinth, and Vicksburg; the bloody Wilderness campaign; and the end of the war at Appomattox. Here is Grant the tactician, the alcoholic, the plain and tough professional soldier, the seasoned and pragmatic commander—but most of all here is Grant the writer as he assesses himself and the events that forged his own character, as well as the destiny of the nation. This edition contains both original volumes of the memoir, with an introduction from Grant's Pulitzer Prize–winning biographer William McFeely.
