Description
While events in Normandy and the Bulge naturally predominate among histories of the last year of World War II in Europe, equally ferocious combats were taking place in southern France and Germany during the 194445 period. Timothy O'Keeffe brings to light the heroic actions of the 14th U.S. Armored Division, "the Liberators," which was thrust into intense combat almost the minute it was deployed. Across the so-called soft underbelly of Europe, the Germans remained determined to defend their southern flank, hammering American forces to a standstill at the Westwall in the fall of 1944. But the experience of that hard fighting prepared the 14th for the German counteroffensive, and O'Keeffe details what happened in the month of January 1945 in the snow-covered Vosges Mountains, when the Wehrmacht's attempt to destroy the Sixth Army Group failed. Able to hold the line until a spring offensive, the American divisions literally exploded their way through the Siegfried Line in March at Steinfeld, and began to propel the Wehrmacht into a retreat from which it could never recover, liberating German POW camps like Hammelburg and Moosburg as they went.
