Description
Written as a saga of episodic tales in his own inimitable voice, this memoir from the legendary singer, songwriter, and guitarist offers a kaleidoscopic view of his personal life and musical creativity. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artist Neil Young tells of his childhood in Ontario, where his father instilled in him a love for the written word; his first brush with mortality when he contracted polio at the age of five; traveling the Canadian prairies in Mort, his 1948 Buick hearse; and performing in a remote town as a polar bear prowled beneath the floorboards. Young remembers leaving Canada on a whim in 1966 and landing in the marijuana-tinged air and communal canyons of Los Angeles, his brief but influential time with Buffalo Springfield, which formed almost immediately after his arrival, and his going solo and overcoming his fear of singing alone. He gives us many stories from the late 60s and early 70s and he takes us through the decades after, describing life at his secluded ranch in the redwoods of Northern California, falling in love with his wife Pegi and raising three children, and finally finding his paradise in Hawaii.

"Waging Heavy Peace finally is Neil Young on Neil Young. Inasmuch as this memoir compares to anything, it's Dylan on Dylan in Chronicles Volume 1, and at the risk of offending, one must read it as perhaps one might the Bible: Young's reality is plastic, his prose prophetic; and myth, metaphor and madness meander through his musings.... The prose is conversational, peppered with sentence fragments, more stream-of-consciousness than narrative. This in itself is lovely, as reading this book likely is a close as most of us will get to riding with Young in his bus, shooting the breeze, reminiscing."Winnipeg Free Press
