Description
Tenor saxophonist Branford Marsalis and pianist Chucho Valdez are both sons of famous musicians, so it's fitting they tap their combined Afro-Cuban jazz heritage in the dance-shuffle "Bebo," a tribute to pianist Bebo Valdés. Marsalis also guests on the romantic "Tabu" and the pell-mell finale, "Abdel."

"The stomping 'Afro-Comanche' sounds like the work of a 1970s McCoy Tyner band, and 'Pilar' is a delicate love song for Valdes and a cello-like arco bass that eventually becomes a straight piano-trio ballad…. His solo opener on the breathless 'Congadanza' is a nine-minute exposition of exactly why he remains one of jazz piano's most majestic virtuosos."—The Guardian

"His now-famous piano runs mix Art Tatum–style controlled fireworks and Cuban pianist Ernesto Lecuona's lyrical grooves…. Here, the idea that New Orleans was once considered the northernmost port of Cuba makes sense; for example, the end of 'Tabu' is a perfect mash-up of the jazz drum set and Afro-Cuban santeria drumming…. At more than 11 minutes, 'Afro-Comanche' addresses the little-known history of the arrival of Comanches from the U.S. to eastern Cuba during the 19th century."—NPR
