Description
Winning three Oscars and nominated for five more, Norman Jewison's 1971 film version of the hit Broadway and West End musical Fiddler on the Roof beautifully sets such memorable songs as "If I Were A Rich Man," "Matchmaker," and "Sunrise, Sunset." Israeli actor Topol won a Golden Globe reprising his performance as Tevye, a poor milkman in a small Jewish village of pre-revolutionary Russia, based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem. Whether debating scripture with his fellow villagers, arguing benevolently with his wife Golde (Norma Crane), or speaking directly to God, Tevye tries to navigate the precarious balance of tradition and modern times when finding husbands for his five daughters or coping with the anti-Semitism that threatens his village. This two-DVD collector's edition contains five featurettes exploring the music, production, and legacy of the film, as well as a documentary on Jewison's brilliant, multifaceted career. Here too are the deleted song "Any Day Now," a close look at Tevye's nightmare sequence, and Jewison reading stories by Sholom Aleichem.
