Description
Sunny and sultry, the voice of Marta Topferova is perfectly complemented by her languorous guitar sound. As heard on tracks like "La Pradera," "Madrugada," and "Mar y Cielo," the resulting music manages to be both festive and intimate. Topferova first became enamored of South American music in her native Czechoslovakia. After moving to the U.S. when she was 11, she learned Spanish, taught herself to play the cuatro and guitar, and subsequently became a leading member of the Latin nueva cancion (new song) movement.

"A release that's got spunk, sensuality and, above all, authenticity to spare…. [Topferova] learned her lessons well, sounding something like Omara Portuondo one moment and Lila Downs or Mercedes Sosa the next."—Roots World

"She has a fine, breathy laidback voice and the ability to switch from gently urgent songs such as the opening 'Juligan' to slow, breathy ballads such as 'La Pradera,' and a handful of other peoples' songs."—The Guardian

"A release that's got spunk, sensuality and, above all, authenticity to spare. The rumbling rhythm of the opening 'Juligan' ('Hooligan') wastes no time in giving Topferova's voice some roughness to soften it, even as that voice has got you suspending more than a little disbelief that the person providing it is from Eastern Europe. She's learned her lessons well, sounding something like Omara Portuondo one moment and Lila Downs or Mercedes Sosa the next. ('La Pradera' and 'Madrugada' even put me in mind of the recently deceased Lhasa de Sela.)"—Roots World
