Description
Documenting the first major U.S. retrospective of Cindy Sherman's photographically based art in nearly 15 years, this exhibit catalog surveys the full span of her 35-year career—a sustained investigation into the construction of contemporary identity and the nature of representation. Some 180 images, from the mid-1970s through the first decade of the new century, are presented here in 153 color and 102 duotone plates, including new works made for the exhibition. The book highlights such major series as her seminal Untitled Film Stills (1977–80); centerfolds (1981); history portraits (1989–90); head shots (2000–2002); and two recent series on the experience and representation of aging in the context of contemporary obsessions with youth and status. A conversation between Cindy Sherman and filmmaker John Waters provides an enlightening view into the creative process. (Note, this paperback edition bears the same ISBN code on its cover as the hardcover edition.)
