Description
The follow-up to Beaton in the Sixties, this transcript collection takes the 20th-century photographer, artist, writer, and designer through the final decade of his life. For more than 50 years, Cecil Beaton was at the center of the worlds of fashion, society, theater, and film in Britain, and his chronicle is loaded with dishy depictions of Bianca Jagger, Greta Garbo, David Hockney, Truman Capote, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret, Mae West, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlene Dietrich, Rose Kennedy, and assorted Rothschilds, Phippses and Wrightsmans. Unlike the six slim volumes of diaries published during his lifetime, these have been left uniquely unedited, while Hugo Vickers, the executor of Beaton's estate and the author of his acclaimed biography, has added extensive notes as waspish as the diary entries themselves.

"Five years after Beaton died in 1980, Vickers used his access to the original diaries for a mammoth, juicily detailed biography. Now, in The Unexpurgated Beaton, he has brought out the last 10 years of those originals, starting in 1970. Considering that the final six years, following a stroke, are covered in 20 quavery pages in a 500-page volume, and that the first four years begin with a drastic prostate operation that dried up much of the juiciness (as far as any personal contribution goes), we may wonder what this new publication can provide. Something unexpected, it turns out: a sadness, if not precisely a gravity. It is the butterfly at dusk, stretched on a wheel of time, and letting the wheel show."NYTimes
