Originally appearing as a short story of 7,000 words in Scribner's Magazine in 1934, this work was, like many of Thomas Wolfe's works, considerably shortened for publication. (Indeed, it was later abridged by another thousand words for republication in the 1935 anthology From Death to Morning.) Wolfe's novella is published here for the first time in its full length—some three times longer than its first presentation—from the same editors who restored the text of O Lost: A Story of the Buried Life, the unabridged version of Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel. Set during World War I, this is a moving portrait of Wolfe's dying father, as well as a rich meditation on American history and ambitions. Through the four men of the title—U.S. Presidents Garfield, Arthur, Harrison, and Hayes, all Republicans and former Civil War generals who followed Ulysses S. Grant into office but had undistinguished terms—Wolfe assesses the mood and promise of the nation and reflects on the obstacles to untapped American potential.
