Description
Half of the performances in this 1976 album reunited Harry Edison with Count Basie, his boss from 1937 to 1950. Their compatibility and their joy at being together again are apparent. Contrasting the spareness and economy of Edison and Basie is the tenor sax of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, another Basie confrère. Basie briefly reverts to his early days in the exhilarating stride piano passages of "Avalon." The pianist on the remaining tracks is the underrated modernist Dolo Coker. Throughout, in two of the trumpet giant's finest sessions, bass and drums are played by John Heard and Jimmie Smith. The standards include "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Spring Is Here," and "On the Trail," while Edison contributes the originals "Helena's Theme," "Homegrown," "E," and "Edison's Lights."

"All of the musicians sound quite inspired and are heard throughout playing at their best and most colorful."—All Music Guide
