Description
In 1844 Flora Tristan embarked on a tour of France to campaign for workers' and women's rights. In 1891, her grandson Paul Gauguin set sail for Tahiti, determined to escape civilization and paint primitive masterpieces. Though they never knew each other, their travels and obsessions unfold side by side in this follow-up to The Feast of the Goat by Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa. Flora, the illegitimate child of a wealthy Peruvian father and a French mother, grew up in poverty in France. After fleeing a brutal husband, she journeyed to Peru in hopes of claiming her inheritance. Failing that, she returned to become a popular writer and a champion of the downtrodden, diligently touring the French countryside to recruit members for her Workers' Union. Gauguin, just as stubbornly visionary, abandoned his wife and five children to paint in the South Seas, where his dreams of paradise were poisoned by poverty, syphilis, and the stifling forces of French colonialism. Affectionate, astute, and quietly caustic, this biographically based novel is a study of passion, ambition, and the determined pursuit of greatness in the face of illness, death, and the strictures of their societies.
