Description
(Winner of the Lincoln Prize) In this multifaceted history—the inspiration for Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning film Lincoln—Doris Kearns Goodwin illuminates Abraham Lincoln's stunning political acuity, relating how he rose from political obscurity to win the presidency over three gifted and nationally known rivals. That Lincoln trumped New York senator William H. Seward, Ohio governor Salmon P. Chase, and Missouri elder statesman Edward Bates, Goodwin posits, was the result of a character forged by hard experience, and an extraordinary capacity for empathy toward other men. She goes on to argue that it was this empathy that enabled the new president to install his one-time opponents as key cabinet members, and also to bring in former Democrats Gideon Welles, Montgomery Blair, and Edwin Stanton to create a true team of rivals, which only Lincoln could have then led. Many of these former critics became his most devoted followers, and Seward in particular offered Lincoln a bosom friendship. In many ways a multiple biography of the cabinet, the book also views Lincoln through the women of these powerful political families, including Frances Seward, Fanny Seward, and Kate Chase who, like Mary Lincoln, displayed striking intelligence and political sophistication.

"Can there be anything new to say about our 16th president? Surprisingly, the answer is yes.... Goodwin has brilliantly described how Lincoln forged a team that preserved a nation and freed America from the curse of slavery."—NYTBR
