Description
Although Britain's Regency period (18101820) is usually remembered as a time of hedonistic parties and opulent displays of wealth, for much of the British public it was an era of uncertainty and privations, claims the author of The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette. Even though these years saw two triumphs over Napoleon, Britain was exhausted by a century of near-continuous warfare, and demobilized soldiers found widespread unemployment and inflation. Desperation drove many citizens to theft and other criminal activities, creating a climate of fear and conflict. King George III, incapacitated by dementia, was replaced by his least favorite son, the foppish and superficial George IV. Many other remarkable and colorful personalities appear in this history, including Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and the Duke of Wellington.
