Description
A Scottish clergyman's daughter, Isabella Lucy Bird (18311904) gained a reputation as one of the most adventurous travelers of her day and was the first woman to become a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. At a time when proper ladies were expected to stay home, Bird traveled to America, Hawaii, Japan, Malay, Tibet, Korea, China, Turkey, and Morocco. In a series of frank, thoughtful, occasionally hilarious letters home to her sister, Bird describes her sojourn through 1870s Japan, traveling 1400 miles by horse, ferry, foot, and jinrikisha to seek out settlements that had never been visited by Westerners (and whose inhabitants were so curious about her that she was spied upon even as she changed clothes). She witnesses Japanese traditions untouched by modernization and also the ancient culture of the Aino people in the far north.
